Field Update

These are challenging and unprecedented times.  Our love and prayers are with all of you.  We hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy.

We wanted to provide an update on the situation here in Wayanad, India.  There’s been a strict national lock-down since March 24th that has been extended until the end of May.  The Kerala state health authorities have been handling the situation precisely, efficiently, and proactively.  The number of active Covid cases as of today is 142 while 72,000 persons are under surveillance.  The majority are individuals who recently arrived from abroad and other parts of the country.

Now, more than ever, we believe in the absolute necessity and importance of community.  Here in Wayanad, we have witnessed this in the way that the villagers are supporting one another, loving one another, caring for one another.  We have witnessed digital communities coming together across the globe.  We feel even more strongly that Profugo’s work is important.  These are uncertain days, perhaps with irreversible consequences, but rest assured, there are slivers of light cutting through the darkness.  Life here is never easy for anyone, and this pandemic only heightens the health-related and economic uncertainty most people here experience as the norm.  But even in the midst of their hard lives getting even harder, people here have managed to show such compassion for one another and the Profugo staff.

Sending warm thoughts!
