Sunitha – Story of Empowerment

Ms. Sunitha is a member of the Kurichyar Tribal Community in Wayanad. She lives in Edathana Tribal settlement. Ms. Sunitha is a single mother taking care of two children studying in 10th and 12th standards. Ms. Sunitha got married at an early age and could not attend school beyond 10th grade.

She first became involved with Profugo as a trainee in the tailoring unit. After the training she bought a tailoring machine and started a tailoring business from her home. Later she was selected as a Community Resource Ambassador (CRA) to organize women farmers from the tribal community. She has excelled in this role and states that she enjoys vegetable cultivation and promotion. When Profugo’s Agricultural Nursery was established, she was selected to join in this work. More recently she has been volunteering to train teenage girls in tailoring at the Profugo Center of Development. The students are very happy with her as an instructor which is evident from the smiles in the faces of both teacher and students. Sunitha, an ordinary tribal woman has become Sunitha Teacher and Profugo is proud to be involved in this transformation. A true example of how small opportunities can convert a capable individual to pursue a better quality of life. Below is a brief conversation that we had with Sunitha.

In my opinion, a model leader should be truthful and sincere. They should be able to engage effectively in the community and interact with people. Leader should be knowledgeable to deal with the community.

Who are you encouraged and inspired by?

My inspiration is my family. My father and mother give me all support and inspires me always.
