Barriers to Education

Although having only working at Profugo IMG_3611for a short time, the incredible results of their projects are evident. When reading the students responses to the opportunities given through The Student Sponsorship Program, I found one student stood out to me. Sujeeth, after two years in the English Speaking program, explained “I am learning many new English words. After each class my parents ask me what I have learned, so I am also teaching them a bit of English.” This led me to believe that the lessons learned in classroom go far beyond and serve much greater than one young student. Reading Sujeeth’s enthusiasm about education gave a reminiscent feeling that I had been fortunate enough to experience in my own city.

Over the past two years I have had multiple opportunities to assist in adult ELS programs throughout Philadelphia. A majority of the students are newly immigrated, forced into low-income jobs, and are working for better opportunities. After working all day then caring for their children, these dedicated individuals attend their classes, eager and willing to learn. Witnessing first hand their thirst for knowledge and drive to learn while battling an everyday economic struggle was a staggering experience for me. With little previous awareness to the severity of their economic circumstances, I quickly learned that the simple tools and little time we provided surpassed their superficial value.

The struggles of a language barrier and hindering economic circumstances are evident not only in our own society, but globally. Even with a developed public school system, students face adversity to receive quality education and those in lesser-developed countries face a more severe obstacle. Profugo works to address these obstacles. The School Sponsorship Program eases the worry of both students and families about providing the necessary materials for the school year, allowing the student to comfortably learn. When the young student is able to reach their potential to learn, the lessons in the classroom soon become helpful to not only the family but to the society.

Consider contributing to ease the financial obstacles, help children continue to access education and learn beyond the classroom!
