Map of Kerala state showing Wayanad district

The District

Wayanad is one of the districts in the southern state of Kerala in India. It is predominantly a forested area and is one of the most under-developed regions of the state, with a sizeable tribal population. The state of Kerala on the other hand is among the states with the highest literacy in India. But, the Wayanad region has been neglected for a long time. Recently, there has been a surge of development activity here. Since the area is rich in flora and fauna, it is an ideal vacation destination and the tourism industry has picked up on this fact. The local population has traditionally sustained itself by gathering food from the forests and by small scale agriculture. Traditionally, the district has also attracted plantation and estate owners to grow a variety of crops. The growing tourism industry is causing a major disruption in the lives of the locals. The industry itself may be good for the district as a whole, but the growing industry does not pay particular attention to the lives of the locals.

Profugo hopes to inject itself into the changing landscape of this region and relieve oppressive pressures on the local population.

Wayanad offers an opportunity to generate immediate and sustainable revenue from agriculture. The primary course of action therefore will involve acquiring a piece of land that will accommodate our proposed ventures and also provide significant revenue. Initial research did show that rubber and coffee estates may be good choices for investment. However, further research revealed that the price of rubber may be affected by various factors in the near future. Coffee is seen to be a more reliable choice, in terms of return on investment.
